Frequently Asked Questions

Are you separate from Norwich City Council?
Yes, we are a separate entity from the Council. The Council was the significant driving force behind the foundation of the charity; however, it is important that we remain an independent voice capable of accessing funding not available to local authorities. Nonetheless, under our Service Level Agreement with the Council, they provide us with £80,000 pounds worth of core-funding per annum over our start up period of three years in return for various services and they are our most significant partner organisation. After this we will be financially independent.

Is HEART a charity?
Yes, we are a private Charitable Trust. This means that although we do undertake business activities, all of our profits are ploughed back into looking after the heritage of Norwich.
Do you run Heritage Open Days?
Yes, at least in Norwich. The Civic Trust are in overall charge of this event in England and Wales but since 2005 HEART has coordinated the nation’s most successful programme each September.

Do you make direct grants?
No, we don’t do that. It would be lovely if we could but our sources of funding require that we bid for money that we can prove will be spent in service of the greater public good in Norwich rather than helping individuals. If your project is for a public use we may be able to point you in the direction of sources of money.
How can I find out more about what you do?
Keep watching the website, it will be updated regularly with news and current projects. You can also download our newsletter as a PDF.

Are you spending money that would be better spent on schools and hospitals?
Our funding is not directly sourced from taxation. Schools, Hospitals and other priorities receive core-funding from Central Government, heritage buildings usually have to rely on charity. Most of our money comes from the European Union and the regional development agencies and is earmarked for cultural, social and heritage uses. If we didn’t bid for it and spend it, it would go to similar projects somewhere else. |
Do you provide tourism information?
If you’re visiting Norwich for a specific heritage reason, for instance to see a certain building or trace your family, we may be able to help. However, for most tourism enquiries we would recommend www.visitnorwich.co.uk

It all looks really interesting, can I get involved?
Yes, you can get involved. You can volunteer with HEART or with one of our partner organisations. We are especially interested in hearing from potential volunteers with experience and/or skills we can use, for instance historical research, architecture or planning, education etc. Even if you don’t have any specific skills to offer we may well need your help, drop us an e-mail
info@heritagecity.org and we will try and place you.
