Organising a Heritage Open Days event

Heritage Open Days is a hugely popular and important event on the city's calendar which keeps getting bigger every year.

As well as running many well-established events from previous years we want to attract new ones so we can make each year's programme of events as big, exciting and diverse as possible, guaranteeing there will be something for everyone.

The HODs programme involves open buildings, guided tours, exhibitions, talks, family activities, window displays, music recitals and re-enactments. Participating venues include museums and tourist attractions; private homes; churches and cathedrals; city centre shops, restaurants and pubs; and offices and workplaces.

If you own or run a building you think might be suitable to take part in Heritage Open Days in the future, or you have an idea of an event you would like to run or please contact Sophie Cabot - . We would love to hear from you.

Basic guidelines for taking part in HODs:

  • Your event must take place during the designated dates (the second Thursday to Sunday tha falls fully in September each year)
  • It must be of heritage interest (in the widest possible sense)
  • It must be free to the public
  • It must be something which is not usually available, or not usually free of charge
  • You must be the organisation responsible for the building/site or have their formal agreement
  • Your event must be registered with HEART

HODs will provide insurance, publicity, guidance and support for events, such as advice on funding and matching up with volunteers. The success of HODs is dependent on an army of passionate and dedicated volunteer stewards and HEART is always interested to hear from people interesting in volunteering to support events.
