Heritage Open Days:
HODs was established in 1994 as England and Wales‘ contribution to European Heritage Days, created by The Council of Europe to increase public awareness of the importance of heritage.
- 49 countries now take part
- Nationally it is co-ordinated by the Civic Trust in partnership with English Heritage
- HODs attracts one million visitors annually in England and Wales
Heritage Open Days in Norwich:
HEART has co-ordinated HODs in Norwich since 2005, when our patron Bill Bryson launched the national Heritage Open Days from Norwich. The programme has since grown year on year and in 2008:
- Norwich topped the leader board for the largest HODs programme of any city in England and Wales outside London
- There were 100,000 visits
- There were around 200 events including guided tours, exhibitions, talks, open buildings, window displays, music recitals, re-enactments and family activities
- There were 160 different organisers of events including museums and tourist attractions; private homes; churches and cathedrals; the Norwich Society; city centre shops, restaurants and pubs; and offices and workplaces
- Events were supported by a team of 700 volunteers
