Heritage Open Days 2008

Heritage Open Days is the largest free cultural event in the country, it is coordinated by The Civic Trust and English Heritage, and the national website can be visited here.

HEART are the coordinating body for Heritage Open Days in the City, and for the last four years Norwich has held the record for the most HODs events taking place anywhere in England and Wales - it’s not a title we intend to lose so to hold our crown we need to register at least 200 buildings and events for this autumn!

Here are some basic guidelines for opening a building/running an event:

  • Your event must take place from the '11th-14th September.
  • It must be of Heritage Interest (in the widest possible sense!).
  • It must be free to the public.
  • It must be something which is not usually available, or not usually free.
  • You must be the organisation responsible for the building/site or have their formal agreement.

EVENT REGISTRATIONS ARE NOW OPEN

If you registered in 2007 you should have been contacted by the HODs team in early March to see if you want to participate again, with the same or another event. If your form didn’t reach you please email us urgently for another copy.

If you haven’t participated before, but you would like to open a building you manage, or set up an event, you can download a HODs registration form here in March and April to send back to us at HEART. If you want to have an informal chat first please email or give us a ring.

In either case It is very important that you return your form by the deadline printed on it - late registrations may not be accepted.

Visiting HOD's Events

The ‘Discover Secret Norwich’ brochure will be published at the beginning of August. It will contain details of everything that there is to see and do during Heritage Open Days in the city. It will also tell you how you can get your tickets for some events. Not all events need to be pre-booked, but those that do will probably fill up quickly.

HEART/HODs will provide insurance, publicity, guidance and support for your event - what we can’t usually provide is cash funding (although we can give advice) or staff, but we can help to match you up with volunteers.

We always need volunteer stewards for HODs - If you don’t have a building or event to register, but you would be interested in volunteering during HODs, please email or give us a ring to leave your details.

Remember: Booking for visits will not start until August - please don’t contact the TIC yet! Early bookings sent in to us will be processed in strict date order after the brochure publication date.
