Why We Do It

Right up until the industrial revolution, Norwich was considered the second city of England. Its fine buildings are a physical manifestation of the wealth created and attracted during this period of commerce, multiculturalism and high prestige. Norwich has two Cathedrals, a Norman Castle, the largest provincial Guildhall in the UK, the only existing pre-reformation friary complex (St Andrew’s and Blackfriars’), the largest intact medieval street pattern in Europe which sits in the largest walled area in the UK, more standing medieval churches (32!) than anywhere north of the Alps and a wealth of mercantile, cultural and religious history straddling a period of a thousand years or more (see timeline).

In fact, we at HEART think that Norwich has an unparalleled selection of buildings showing a period of continuous development over this 1000-year period, from the Norman Castle through to the award winning Forum, which houses the Millennium Library.

We Do

HEART has a passion for communicating what we know about this amazing heritage resource nationally and internationally. We and many others also believe that Norwich deserves to be known as one of the premier heritage destinations in the UK and Europe. For more information see www.visitnorwich.co.uk

Heritage-led regeneration isn’t just about conserving wonderful buildings. It’s also about increasing the economic viability of an area, improving what is offered culturally, raising social inclusion and building an environmentally sustainable urban structure. Every penny spent by a visitor to Norwich has a ‘multiplier effect’ as it feeds into the local economy. Every improvement to our physical and cultural surroundings creates a more welcoming and exciting atmosphere for businesses looking to relocate their staff and money. Every child that learns about the proud history of Norwich and feels their part in it is more likely to become an ambassador for this fine city.
